Balcony Garden Basics for Small Apartments

Vikram Shetty · 2 August 2025

A three-foot-wide balcony is enough for a real garden if you build upward instead of outward. Here is how to plan light, drainage and railing weight before you buy a single plant.

A narrow apartment balcony with railing planters and hanging pots

The single biggest mistake on a small balcony is buying plants before working out which direction it faces. A west-facing balcony in Delhi or Ahmedabad gets brutal afternoon sun that will cook most tender foliage by May; a north-facing one in Mumbai may never get direct sun at all. Spend a weekend noting when light hits the railing, then shop.

Once you know your light, go vertical. Railing planters, a two-tier stand against the wall, and two or three hanging pots will hold more greenery than floor pots ever will, and they keep the floor clear enough to actually stand out there.
